California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Lewis (1918-1984) was a publicist with United Artists from 1952-1961 before becoming an independent motion picture producer. Among the pictures that he produced was "The Pawnbroker," which was released in 1965. The movie deals with a Polish immigrant who has survived the Nazi concentration camps and works in a pawnshop in Harlem, New York. From the description of Papers, 1961-1965.
